Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning have come a long way since the words “artificial intelligence” were conceived in 1955, to identify a promising research area for the world of science.

The world has seen several developments, including robots and programming languages, culminating in the current exponential advancements. Microsoft-backed OpenAI, Google, Amazon, the Project Management Institute and many others now lead the way with dynamic products and services that continue reshaping the entirety of society. For the average project professional, AI has drastically evolved the workplace, with global research estimating that as many as 6 of 10 companies have adopted some form of AI.

What does this mean for project management roles? 

The research and advisory Gartner approximates that, by 2030, 80 percent of project management tasks will be taken over by AI. But, as the AI firm Levity notes, the effectiveness of AI hinges on human-fed data, the so-called Human-in-the-Loop approach. 

The US public sector technology veteran Keisha Lewis remarks, “….AI itself will not take your job, but a project manager that knows how to use AI effectively might….”.
