Editorial‍

‍Author: Daniel Rodellar, PMP

Dear readers and members, on behalf of our Copy Editors’ team, I take the editorial job this month.

We have arranged for the July Edition starting with a retrospective of one of the events in ZĂĽrich. It was about giving the tools to strengthen teamwork and foster a collaborative culture. Both things are what we all unquestionably wish for in the workplace (and in private too, I would say).

We also develop in this edition the initiative to create a positive change with the PMI Social Impact initiative.

Besides, we kickoff a series of articles about PMI Swiss Corporate Networking Group (SCNG) companies. Read more on the insightful interview below and learn stimulating information about SIX.

On the "Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging" series, Eric concludes with several very insightful takeaways. Every step forward is progress, he says, and that is so true. Most of the time, done is better than perfect, step by step, one can reach a big objective.

Special thanks to all the ones that proposed to be speakers of the 2023 PMI Switzerland Conference in Basel!

For the upcoming 2024-2025 election term, we are looking for active PMI Switzerland Chapter members. Want to join? Details below.

Enjoy the start of the summer period, long days, and warmer weather.

‍Message from the Board

Author: Joachim Dehais, PMP, VP Volunteers

Many changes have crossed the horizon to land at our doorsteps. War threatens our economies, the land, and for some their families and lives. Automation & the dreaded artificial intelligence threaten our jobs with ever more human capabilities. Inflation engulfs western Europe. It is easy to speak of resilience if you are wealthy and secure, or unattached and responsible for little. Harder so for the average person and even less for managers.

First let’s look once more at the topics of robustness, resilience. These topics are extensively covered in major philosophies, biological processes, but also economies, because we need both of them in our lives. Robustness is like the oak. Proverbial for some, it stands alone, strong, and unchanging in the storm thanks to its weight and strong roots, only to be toppled when the winds grow too mighty (Crédit Suisse comes to mind). Resilience is like the equally proverbial reed. Weak in appearance, but able to weather the greatest storms through three things: low investment in a single environment, adaptability to changing winds, and growth in groups.

Can we now apply these principles market fit, process, and upskilling?

PMI Swiss Corporate Networking Group (SCNG)

‍Interviewer: Martin Härri, PMP, PMI-SP, PMI-ACP,
Director Corporate Relationships PMI Switzerland Chapter

The PMI Swiss Corporate Networking Group (SCNG) is quite a unique organization within PMI, as very few chapters have a formal network which unites not project professionals, but company representatives. The SCNG was created back in 2010 and is bringing together representatives of over 20 organizations based in Switzerland to share best practices and experiences about project management topics of relevance to their companies. More about the PMI SCNG can be found here.

Starting with this edition, we will feature portraits of the SCNG members in the newsletter, with a focus on the points that matter most to PMI members. We hope you will enjoy this new series of articles, and we are looking forward to your feedback.

Interview Partner: Klaus Christoph Wagener,

Head Project Portfolio Management

‍“Klaus Christoph, can you tell us a few words about yourself, and how you got into your current position?”

After completing my university studies in Business Administration and Management, I started as a branch manager in a German bank, then went into controlling and accounting, followed by operational risk control for a Bank in Switzerland. At the same time, I deepened my capabilities in change management and then gradually switched to project and program management roles. Finally, I got a call from a former colleague who motivated me to move to SIX in 2019. Independent of the assignment my goal has always been to contribute with my blended experience to the success of the company.

Social impact initiative with Bevel World on
project management training

Author: Mafalda Amaro

Dear PMI Switzerland Community,

We are thrilled to share with you the incredible success of our recent social impact initiative, held in collaboration with Bevel World, where we provided project management training to a group of 35 displaced professionals from Ukraine. The event took place on the 24th and 25th of June, and it was an inspiring demonstration of how our collective efforts can make a lasting social impact.

At PMI Switzerland, we believe in the power of our project management community to create positive change. Partnering with Bevel World, an organization committed to social transformation, allowed us to amplify our impact and reach a broader audience. Their expertise in working with displaced individuals created a synergistic partnership that amplified the social outcomes we aim to achieve.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging: Helping Enhance Sustainability and Competitiveness in Uncertain Times

‍Author: Eric Jelenje, PMP

Over the past three editions of the Newsletter, we have been talking about all things Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB), and their relevance to modern day organizational and project management.

As a continuation, I was privileged to facilitate an evening of conversation around DEI  and its benefits to organizations needing to thrive amidst immense volatility and uncertainty.

Kickstarting proceedings, Adi Muslic, VP for Sponsors and Partners, provided a background to the event’s organization process and a brief overview of the keynote presentation.

The next highlight, a 3-minute monologue on the power of DEI in the work, was an ideal preamble, reinforcing its relevance in the face of talent shortages and societal upheaval in the project economy. The conversation subsequently shifted to the DEI strategy formulation process, referencing  the USA for Africa project as a case study.
